Anti -Rowlatt Satyagrah - 1919

  • The date of March 30, 1919, under the leadership of Gandhij, was set against the Rowlatt Act for an All India Satyagraha Movement.
  • It was later changed to 6 April 1919. There was warning of strike. Thus the term strike was first time used in the national movement.
  • On 6 April 1919, strikes were organized across the country at Gandhiji's request, due to minor incidents of violence, Gandhiji's entry into Punjab and Delhi was banned.
  • On 9 April, Gandhiji was arrested in an attempt to enter Delhi but due to increasing public anger, he was taken to Bombay and released.
  • Satyagraha postponed on 18 April Satyagraha was successful. No action under this act was taken and was withdrawn after 3 years.
  • The Rowlatt Act was criticized by the Indian public as a 'Black Law'. Gandhiji criticized the Rowlatt Act and established a Satyagraha Sabha to protest against it.
  • The Satyagraha Sabha established by Gandhiji to protest against the Rowlatt Act included Jamnalal Das, Dwarka Das, Shankarlal Banker, Omar Somani, BG Harnaman etc.
  • This was the first national level movement in which Gandhiji participated
